The wine label is like the 'ID card' of the wine, which records all kinds of wine information in detail. Today, I will teach you how to read wine and wine labels.
1. Foreign language labels
5 elements on the wine label
Generally, there are 5 basic elements on a wine label, including:Country (Region) and Production Area of Origin(Region)、Producer or winery (Producer/Chateau/Domaine), grape variety (Variety), year (Vintage) and alcohol content (ABV).
Interpretation of the five elements
1
Country (Region) and Region of Origin (Region)
The country (region) and region of origin information indicates the region where the grapes were made.
Knock on the blackboard!!!
The more specific the general production area information, the better the quality of the wine.
For example: a bottle of wine from France and a bottle of wine from Pauillac in Bordeaux, France. The latter is more specific and the quality is more guaranteed.
2
Producer (château, estate)
This information tells you the provenance of the wine, specifically who produced it.
In New World wine regions, it is usually marked on the conspicuous position of the wine label, and in Old World wine regions, it often appears in an inconspicuous position at the bottom of the wine label.
3
Grape Variety
The grape variety is the variety of grapes used to make the wine.Grape varieties are often labeled in New World regions. In Europe, most wine varieties are not marked, but the production area is marked, because the grape varieties that can be selected in each production area are fixed.
Common red grape varieties:
Cabernet Sauvignon
Merlot
Pinot Noir
Syrah (Shiraz)
Tempranillo
Common white grape varieties:
chardonnay
Riesling
Sauvignon Blanc
Gewurztraminer
4
Year (Vintage) is the year the grapes were harvested.
The price of wine varies from year to year, as does the quality. It sounds mysterious, but it is actually very easy to understand.
Grapes are crops, and they depend on the sky to eat.Let’s take the litchi from Shenzhen as an example.Lychees in Shenzhen are divided into big and small years, and the output is more and the quality is better in the new year. The annual output is small and the price is expensive. For different wine producing regions, the situation of each year is different. The better years of Bordeaux in France are: 2000, 2003, 2005 and 2009.
5
alcohol content
Wine is a kind of fermented wine, that is, under the action of yeast, the sugar in grapes is converted into alcohol and carbon dioxide. The higher the sugar content in the grapes, the higher the alcohol content in the resulting wine. The accumulation of sugar in grapes is produced by photosynthesis. Under the premise of suitable temperature, the higher the temperature in the production area, the higher the efficiency of photosynthesis and the more sugar accumulated in the grapes, so the alcohol content of the wine will be higher.
2. Chinese label
According to Article 92 of the 'Food Safety Law of the People's Republic of China', imported food should meet my country's national food safety standards.According to GB 7718-2011 'National Food Safety Standard General Rules for Prepackaged Food Labeling' and other regulations, the label of imported wine must indicate the following content:
01
product name
Usually red wine or white wine
02
Ingredients
The ingredient list of wine is very simple, and it is usually written like this
Raw materials and accessories: grape juice, sulfur dioxide.
03
Alcohol content
This is generally consistent with the alcohol content of the foreign language label, and the alcohol content should be marked in '%vol'.
04
Country or place of origin, such as:
Country of Origin: France
05
net weight
This item is consistent with the foreign language label, generally 750ml.
06
Importer's name, address, contact information
07
date stamp
The production date/filling date is the date on which the bottle of wine forms the final sales unit.
Wine and other fermented wines with an alcohol content greater than or equal to 10% vol and their blended wines are exempted from labeling the shelf life.
08
Storage conditions
Prepackaged food labels should indicate storage conditions, and wine should be labeled according to actual storage requirements.
09
WARNING: Excessive drinking is harmful to health.
You can also choose to mark: product type, production area, grape variety, grape picking year, product introduction, awards, etc., but it must be true, accurate, and well-founded.
Hit the blackboard again!
